It’s very heartbreaking when we listen about a dog that has a disability or a medical problem, but it’s heartwarming when you see veterinarians doing their best to save those pure amazing souls.
The dog’s name was Gilbert, he was 6 years old, and he had been rescued a few days ago by an organization for saving animals in need called the “Tickled Pink Weimarner Rescue” in New Mexico. Sadly, he was found with a watermelon-sized tumor near the chest. Volunteers and the staff couldn’t believe what they had seen, maybe they have got so many cases but this one was not like any other, the tumor size was very big and unbelievable. There was no other solution but putting him in the emergency room. He started his medical treatments, they started to make urine and blood tests for him, also he needed blood transfusion, and an IV catheter was put for him. He is a very strong dog to go through all of this. After all this medical treatment, Gilbert the dog was comfortable somehow; he understands that he is getting help.
Four veterinarians were there to help Gilbert. His condition was normal, blood works normally and also his temperature was well, he seemed to be healthy, but of course he was suffering because of this tumor, and there is no other choice but the surgery or death. But maybe it was the time for the dog to take the decision, he stood up and walked to one of the volunteers and he looked at them in the eyes, he was telling them that he is ready to fight for his life and for the second chance he had been given.
The choice was the surgery, the will not give up on Gilbert, the donations campaign for him started, the goal was just 6,800$ but it was surprising that it crossed 12,000$, it was the effect of Gilbert’s touching story.
Actually this dog is a hero, how he survived this, and how he had faced all the neglecting, but he was lucky to have a second chance in life. Gilbert finally had a new chance to live and have a normal safe life after what he had been through. He made it through the surgery, but the complete recovery is not reached yet, this tumor lived with him for about a year as the veterinarians said which affected him, It was difficult for the dog to walk with it for this long time so he was unbalanced, it just requires physical treatments to walk and move normally. The complete recovery will be reached as soon as possible, after that, Gilbert will be adopted and enjoy the life he was fighting for.
